Teen Skills Group Therapy in Bentonville, AR
The teen years are a time of massive change. Our skills group gives adolescents ages 13-17 the tools to navigate friendships, emotions, school stress, and identity — in a supportive peer environment.
Adolescence is one of the most challenging developmental periods. Our teen skills group provides a structured, safe space where teens learn evidence-informed coping strategies, practice social skills with peers, and build the emotional intelligence they need to thrive (Weisz et al., 2017, Clinical Psychology Review).
Skills We Build
Evidence-Informed skills taught through interactive group exercises, real-world practice, and peer support — designed specifically for the adolescent brain (Cochrane Review: Group CBT for Adolescents, James et al., 2015).
Emotional Regulation
Learn to identify, understand, and manage intense emotions without shutting down or lashing out. Teens practice techniques like grounding, cognitive reframing, and mindfulness in real-time with peer support.
Social Skills & Communication
Practice assertiveness, active listening, conflict resolution, and boundary-setting in a safe group setting. Perfect for teens struggling with friendships, social anxiety, or feeling misunderstood.
Stress & Anxiety Management
Develop a personalized toolkit for managing academic pressure, social media stress, family conflict, and performance anxiety. Learn to recognize stress signals early and intervene before overwhelm hits.
Identity & Self-Esteem
Explore values, strengths, and authentic self-expression in a judgment-free zone. Build healthy self-image that isn't dependent on social media validation or peer approval.

Why a Skills Group for Teens?
Individual therapy is powerful, but some skills are best learned alongside peers. Our group format creates natural opportunities to practice in real-time.
How It Works
A thoughtfully structured process designed to ensure your teen is ready, matched with the right group, and supported throughout their journey.
Parent & Teen Consultation
We meet with parent(s) and teen separately to assess fit, discuss goals, and answer questions. The teen must feel comfortable and willing — we never force participation. We'll match your teen with the right group.
Weekly Group Sessions (90 min)
12 weeks of structured group activities combining skill instruction, group exercises, discussion, and practice. Each session has a specific theme while allowing space for teens to bring real-life situations for group problem-solving.
Progress & Transition
Regular check-ins with parents at weeks 4, 8, and 12. At completion, teens have a personalized skills plan. Options include joining the next group cycle, transitioning to individual therapy, or graduation with maintenance support.

What We Cover: The 12-Week Teen Skills Curriculum
Each cohort follows a structured, week-by-week arc so teens build on what they learned the session before. The curriculum blends skills from dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and social-skills training, adapted for the adolescent brain. Themes are flexible — group leaders make room for the real situations teens bring in each week.
Weeks 1–3 · Foundations & Group Trust
Getting comfortable: building group norms together, understanding confidentiality, naming personal goals, and learning the language of emotions. Teens map their own "stress signals" and complete a values check-in so the group knows what matters to each member.
Weeks 4–6 · Emotion Regulation
Distress-tolerance tools for big feelings — grounding, paced breathing, and the "opposite action" skill from DBT — plus cognitive reframing for the unhelpful thoughts that fuel anxiety and low mood. Teens practice on low-stakes scenarios before applying skills to real ones.
Weeks 7–9 · Social & Communication Skills
Assertiveness without aggression, active listening, repairing a friendship after conflict, and setting boundaries (including online). Teens rehearse hard conversations — saying no, asking for help, handling exclusion — with peer feedback in a judgment-free space.
Weeks 10–12 · Identity, Resilience & Maintenance
Self-esteem that doesn't depend on social-media validation, healthy screen and sleep habits, problem-solving under pressure, and a written personal "skills plan" each teen takes home. We close with a relapse-prevention plan and transition options.
Group skills training is one part of a broader plan. Approaches like group CBT and DBT skills are widely used with adolescents; for general, evidence-based information on youth mental health, see the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
Is This Group Right for Your Teen?
The Teen Skills Group is designed for adolescents ages 13–17 in the Bentonville and Northwest Arkansas area who want to build practical coping and social skills alongside peers. Because teens must feel willing to participate, both a parent or guardian and the teen take part in screening before joining.
This group may be a good fit if your teen:
- · Struggles with friendships, social anxiety, or feeling misunderstood
- · Has trouble managing big emotions, frustration, or worry
- · Faces academic pressure, perfectionism, or performance anxiety
- · Wants to practice communication and boundary-setting with peers
- · Is navigating identity, self-esteem, or social-media stress
- · Would benefit from skills learned and rehearsed with others their age
A different level of care may fit better if your teen:
- · Is in active crisis or having thoughts of self-harm or suicide
- · Needs one-on-one attention before group participation
- · Is working through acute trauma that needs individual processing first
- · May benefit from a medication evaluation (we coordinate with your teen's primary care provider or a prescriber — we do not prescribe)
If group isn't the right starting point, we can recommend individual therapy or other support.
Intake & screening: Every teen starts with a brief, no-pressure consultation — parent/guardian and teen are seen so we can confirm the group is a safe, appropriate fit and obtain parental consent. If your teen is in crisis or thinking about self-harm, call or text 988 (the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) any time, or go to the nearest emergency room. The Teen Skills Group is supportive care — it is not crisis or emergency treatment.
Group Format, Confidentiality & What to Expect
We keep the group small and consistent so teens can build real trust. Here's how it runs and what families can expect.
Closed cohort, 4–6 teens
Each cohort is closed once it begins, so the same teens learn together for all 12 weeks. Members are grouped by age and developmental stage for a comfortable fit.
90-minute weekly sessions
Twelve weekly 90-minute sessions led by a licensed clinician. Sessions combine skill instruction, group practice, and space for real-life situations.
In-person + telehealth
Held in person at our downtown Bentonville office (240 S Main St, Suite #270). Secure telehealth participation is available across Arkansas when clinically appropriate.
Confidentiality & group norms
Our group clinicians are guided by the NASW Code of Ethics. In the first session, the cohort agrees to shared ground rules: what is shared in group stays in group, one person speaks at a time, no name-calling or judgment, and participation is always invited, never forced. Teens are told clearly that while the therapist protects confidentiality, there are limits required by law — including safety concerns such as risk of harm to self or others, or suspected abuse, which the clinician must act on. Because participation involves a minor, a parent or guardian provides written consent, receives general progress updates, and partners on home strategies — while the teen's specific in-group disclosures are handled with developmentally appropriate privacy. We explain exactly how this works during intake so both teen and family know what to expect.
Cost & insurance
ZipHealthy is a Blue Cross Blue Shield preferred provider and works with most major plans; with insurance, out-of-pocket costs for covered sessions often fall in the $20–$40 range, though your exact responsibility depends on your benefits. Before your teen starts, you'll receive a Good Faith Estimate of expected costs, and you can review our pricing and what to expect page for details. We'll verify your coverage and answer billing questions during intake.
