What the Initial Consultation Is & Who It Helps
The initial consultation at ZipHealthy is a brief, no-cost conversation with a licensed clinician on our team before any therapy begins. It is not a therapy session, a diagnosis, or a medical evaluation. Think of it as a two-way introduction: you describe what is bringing you in, ask whatever you want to know about how we work, and we share honestly whether what you are looking for is something our practice is well suited to support. There is no chart opened, no insurance billed, and no expectation that you continue. If we are not the right fit, we would rather tell you that and point you toward a better match than have you start a process that will not serve you.
This step exists because choosing a therapist is a personal decision, and the working relationship matters. Decades of psychotherapy research point to the quality of the therapeutic alliance — the sense of trust, agreement on goals, and collaboration between client and clinician — as one of the most consistent factors associated with benefit from therapy across many different treatment approaches (American Psychological Association, Understanding psychotherapy and how it works). A short consultation gives that relationship a chance to start on the right footing, before time, money, or emotional energy are committed.
A free consultation tends to be most useful if you recognize yourself in any of the following:
- You have never been to therapy and are not sure what it involves or whether it is "for someone like me."
- You have tried therapy before and want to make sure the next clinician's style and focus actually fit what you need this time.
- You are weighing whether individual therapy, a structured group such as our DBT skills group, or a different kind of support makes the most sense.
- You have practical questions about cost, insurance, scheduling, or telehealth that you want answered before committing.
- You are reaching out on behalf of a partner or family member and want to understand options.
A consultation is not a substitute for emergency care. If you are experiencing thoughts of suicide or are in immediate danger, call or text 988 (the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or go to your nearest emergency room. Helpful background on what therapy can and cannot do is available from the National Institute of Mental Health's overview of psychotherapies.
How It Works — From First Contact to Your First Session
Knowing the sequence ahead of time tends to lower the natural anxiety that comes with reaching out. Here is what the process actually looks like at our downtown Bentonville practice.
1. You reach out
Book the free 15-minute consultation online, call (479) 259-1390, or send a message through our contact form. The free consultation is a quick phone call at a time that works for you.
2. The 15-minute conversation
You share, in your own words, what is going on and what you are hoping for. We answer questions about approach, availability, and fees. No forms, no diagnosis — just a conversation.
3. A clear recommendation
We suggest a starting point — for example individual therapy, a skills group, or a referral elsewhere — and explain why. You leave knowing your options, with no pressure to decide on the spot.
4. Your first full session
If you decide to proceed, your first 50-to-60-minute intake session is where the clinical work begins: a fuller history, your goals, and a collaborative plan. This is the paid session your benefits or self-pay rate applies to.
The first full session — the clinical intake, which runs about 60 minutes — is more detailed than the consultation. Your clinician will ask about your history, current stressors, sleep, relationships, prior care, and what "better" would look like for you. You are always free to pace what you disclose; nothing has to come out in the first hour. Together you and your therapist set initial goals and agree on how often to meet. Many people feel some relief simply from having put words to what they have been carrying.
If any concern that comes up would be better supported with medication, our team will help you coordinate that. With your written permission, we partner with your primary care provider or a psychiatric prescriber so your care stays connected. Therapy and medication are not mutually exclusive, and many people use one, the other, or both at different points.
Our Approach
ZipHealthy is a multidisciplinary behavioral health group practice. Much of our work is talk-based and psychosocial: we help you understand patterns, build coping skills, and make the changes you came in for. We draw on established, evidence-informed modalities and match the approach to the person rather than forcing every client into one method.
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). A structured, present-focused approach to the links between thoughts, feelings, and behavior, with a substantial research base across anxiety and depression (American Psychological Association, What is cognitive behavioral therapy?).
- Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills. Practical mindfulness, distress-tolerance, emotion-regulation, and interpersonal skills, offered individually and through our DBT skills group.
- EMDR for trauma. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is recognized as an effective treatment for post-traumatic stress; you can read more about how it is used on our EMDR therapy page (background: National Institute of Mental Health, PTSD).
- Acceptance and mindfulness-based work. Skills for relating differently to difficult thoughts and feelings, often woven into individual sessions.
During the consultation we will not lock you into a method. Instead we listen for what you are describing — persistent worry, low mood, the aftermath of a hard experience, relationship strain — and explain which approaches commonly help with that, and what the early sessions might focus on. If you want to dig deeper before reaching out, our condition pages on anxiety treatment and depression therapy describe these methods in more detail.
Format & Logistics
Your free 15-minute consultation is by phone, and you are welcome to book it from anywhere. If you decide to move forward, ongoing therapy happens at our office at 240 S Main Street, Suite #270 in downtown Bentonville, or by secure video and phone for clients in the states where our clinicians are licensed — Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, Virginia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. That keeps care reachable for people in Rogers, Springdale, Fayetteville, and beyond. You can read how virtual sessions work on our telehealth therapy in Arkansas page.
Insurance and self-pay. We are in-network with several major plans and verify your specific benefits before your first paid session so there are no billing surprises. If you do not have coverage we accept, or prefer not to use insurance, we offer self-pay and a limited number of reduced-fee (sliding scale) slots based on need and availability. A clear breakdown of session types and what they cost is on our pricing and what to expect page and our therapy cost in Arkansas guide.
Good Faith Estimate. Under the federal No Surprises Act, clients who are not using insurance — or whose service is not covered — have the right to a written Good Faith Estimate of expected costs before care begins. We provide this on request, and you can learn more on our Good Faith Estimate page.
Confidentiality. What you share is protected under HIPAA and our professional code of ethics, within the limits the law requires (for example, situations involving imminent risk of harm or mandated reporting). The consultation itself is confidential. This is a description of our practice, not a legal guarantee; your clinician will review the specifics with you before therapy begins.
Want to prepare between now and your first session?
Our online shop offers therapist-curated workbooks, journals, and self-guided wellness tools you can use while you wait for your appointment. They complement therapy — they do not replace it.
